General Information

• Transfering the softskill training and coaching concept of the IGS to universities in other countries. Conducting workshops at the University of Evora, Portual, and at the Chiang Mai University, Thailand, in 2019. Both funded by an Erasmus+ ICM of the European Commission. Contributing to an according project of the Aturo Prat University in Iquique, Chile, since 2020.
• Since January 2021, local co-ordinator of the Erasmus+ Capacity Building project SSAPI, funded by the EACEA of the European Commission.
• Local co-ordinator of three ERASMUS MUNDUS projects, funded by the EACEA of the European Commission:
  Sustainable Green Economies through Learning, Innovation, Networking and Knowledge Exchange (gLINK), finished on the 31st of December 2018 with 12 incoming and 3 outgoing mobilities.
  Featured eUrope and South asIa mObility Network (FUSION), finished on the 14th of May 2018 with 14 incoming and 4 outgoing mobilities.
  Centre of Excellence for Learning, Innovation, Networking and Knowledge (cLINK), after 20 mobilities to Bremen finished on the 14th of July 2016.
  
  53 mobilities took place, 47 students and researchers on all levels of qualification joined the IGS and the University of Bremen under my guidance. They came in from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Indonesia, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Reports of the scholars are here available.
• Managing Director of the International Graduate School for Dynamics in Logistics (IGS), an interdisciplinary doctoral training programme of the University of Bremen. The IGS is main educational pillar of the Bremen Research Cluster for Dynamcis in Logistics (LogDynamics). The IGS started in 2005. By now 78 international doctorate candidates from 24 different nations have enrolled at the IGS, and 53 dissertation processes have been successfully finished under my structural supervision.
• In 2011 LogDynamics has been awarded for Internationalising the Doctorate Training in the Engineering Sciences by , the National Academy of Science and Engineering.
• Member of the devision IKAP of BIBA - Bremer Institut für Produktion und Logistik GmbH at the University of Bremen.
• Co-initiator of the EU-IP wearIT@work, together with colleagues at TZI, University of Bremen.
• Design and setup of the "Mobile Research Center (MRC)" in the Mobile Solution Center (MSC), a public private partnership, funded by the City of Bremen (Germany).

• The SKIMA 2023 Conference took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on December 2-4, 2023. It is a platform for the cooperation between European and Asian partners since ages. I am serving as member of the program committee and organized a panel session of the SSAPI project, together with some other SSAPI partners.
• In 2023, I contributed to SSAPI an Erasmus+ Capacity Building project, funded by the EACEA of the European Commission. The topic is Strategic Support for Accreditation of Programs and Internationalization at South Asian Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) / SSAPI. I organizing several training units on accreditation and internationalization by experts of the University of Bremen in Evora and some Asian partner countries (Maldives, Pakistan, Bhutan ans Sri Lanka). I myself providing training on internationalzation in Sri Lanka in December 2023. In July 2022, I hosted the first face-to-face training of the at the University of Bremen. More than 40 professors, lecturers and staff members from 9 Asian and one European partners stayed in Bremen for two weeks.
• Supara Grudpan, doctorate candidate of the IGS, supervised by Prof. Dr. Rainer Malaka, Faculty of Mathematics/Computer Science, finished her dissertation procedure by with a colloquium on November 13, 2023. She is the 55th doctoral degree holder I supported structurally in the IGS.
• On January 15, 2021 a new , started with another European and 10 Asian universities from Bhutan, Malediven, Pakistan und Sri Lanka. It has a duration of three years. Capital University of Science and Technology (CUST), Islamabad, Pakistan, is coordinating the consortium.

About me

I studied computer sciences at the Carl von Ossietzky University in Oldenburg and at the University of Bremen. I obtained my diploma degree in 1995 with a topic on the field of human-computer interaction: "Formal Semantic of Natural Languages". Before studying at university, I worked as scanner operator and repro-photographer in the German printing industry for about 10 years.

From 1995 to 2000 I held the position of a guest scientist at University of Bremen, working on gender-related topics. I supported projects such as the "Pilot project for information and motivation of girls and women for the studies of computer sciences" and the "Informatica Feminale – summer university for women in informatics".

In 1996 I started to work as researcher at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the University of Hamburg (LKI) on the project "MIMIC – Medical Intelligent Monitoring in Intensive Care", funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education, Science, Research and Technology (BMBF).

From 1999 to 2007 I was researcher at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Bremen within the Center of Computing Technologies (TZI) in different positions. In 2001/2002, I carried out an extensive study on 'Technological and Application-orientated Potential of Wearable Computing' which built the basis for the first cross-disciplinary concerted activity of TZI. From 2003 to 2007 I was managing director of the so called concerted activity '[wearLab] – Mobile & Wearable System Solutions'. I designed and organized workshops and congresses on 'Mobile Solutions for Health Care', initially funded by EFRE. Further I worked as a project manager in various projects of TZI on the core theme 'Mobile and Wearable Computing'.

In 2004 I co-initiated the project 'wearIT@work - Empowering the mobile worker by wearable computing' and further research projects within the upraising field of wearable computing. wearIT@work was funded by the European Commission. It was set up as an Integrated Project to investigate Wearable Computing as a technology dealing with computer systems integrated in clothing. With a project volume of about 23.7 million EUROs and a funding of about 14.6 million, it was the largest civil project world-wide in this research and development area.

In 2004 I developed a novel concept for the close co-operation of science and business on the topic 'mobile solutions' under the label Mobile Solution Center Bremen. One pillar of the Mobile Solution Center was the interdisciplinary research and transfer institute 'Mobile Research Center (MRC)'. Another part, for business purpose, was the Mobile Solution Group. As a communication instrument for co-operation in the barrier-crossing course of the Mobile Solution Center I developed and applied the method Testing and Living Technologies, aimed at knowledge transfer in both directions, which has been implemented as 'DemoCenter', a show room equiped with cutting-egded mobile solutions - prototypes and products. From 2004-2007 I was Managing Director and Sales Manager of the DemoCenter. Now, the Mobile Solution Group is established as enterprise in a business holing.

In 2006 I received my PhD (Dr.-Ing.) from the Department of Computer Science at the University of Bremen for my thesis 'Employment potential, problems of use, and approaches to solutions of mobile wearable information and communication technologies' (written in German).

Since June 2007 I have been the managing director of the International Graduate School of Dynamics in Logistics (IGS) within the 'Bremen Research Cluster for Dynamics in Logistics - LogDynamics' of the University of Bremen. The IGS is the research training programme of LogDynamics. The curriculum is designed as three-year full time study. The working language is English. The doctoral candidates benefit from a disciplinary supervision, scientific mentoring as well as from organizational and social support and a unique structural supervision and coaching by me. Since 2005, 78 doctoral candidates out of 24 nations have enrolled at the IGS, by now more than 90% of them are from abroad. Until now 53 dissertation processes have been successfully finished. The IGS has a proportion of women of currently 40%, which is significantly more than the average of 15% in the engineering and computer sciences in Germany (acatech, 2012).

From the winter term 2014 until summer term 2018 I was teaching the course "Dynamics in Logistics - Basics for Multidisciplinary Approaches" on a regular base, together with colleagues of the Faculties of Production Engineering and Economics of the Unversity of Bremen. The course was intended for all Bachelor and Master students "Wirtschaftsingenieurwesen" in the teaching project module.

I have been organising several workshops and conferences. I am co-organiser and reviewer of the LDIC conference series of LogDynamics and was chair of ImViReLL 2012. I am IPC member of further conferences, e.g. IFAC MCPL and SKIMA. Currently, I am program chair of SKIMA 2022. I was local co-ordinator of three ERASMUS MUNDUS exchange projects, cLINK, FUSION and gLINK. Now, I am local coordinator of an Erasmus+ Capacity Building project, SSAPI. In 2017 I was the local organiser of a three months lasting PhD SummerCamp of the Texas Tech University, USA, at the University of Bremen. During this time 15 Äthiopian doctoral candidates took part in more than 20 academic and industrial events. They passed their proposal defence in Bremen under the guidance of 10 professors of TTU. In 2018 the second cohort stayed in Bremen for 3 months, starting on the 15th of March. This time the TTU PhD SummerCamp has been realised as a close cooperation of TTU, the Bremen-based enterprise INROS LACKNER SE and the IGS.

In 2016 I stayed for one month as guest lecturer at the College of Science and Technology (CST) of the Royal University of Bhutan. The stay has been funded by the Erasmus Mundus project FUSION. From November 13, 2017 I stayed for two months as guest lecturer at the School of Information Technology of the Mae Fah Luang University, and at the College of Art, Media and Technology (CAMT) of the Chiang Mai University (CMU), Thailand, under the funding scheme of the Erasmus Mundus project gLINK. An Erasmus+ ICM support allowed me to continue my cooperation with CMU by another mobility of three weeks in December 2019.

My research interests focus on human-computer interaction in the field of mobile work beyond desktop computing; wearable computing and smart clothes in industrial and health application areas; usability of wearable computing solutions; “using technology as a hands-on experience” as a novel HCI method for early requirement engineering and evaluation of wearable computing solutions. I advocate for an user-centered, participatory, application-oriented, interdisciplinary, and culturally aware approach for designing appropriate wearable computing solutions.

Beyond the disciplinary research, I am mainly working in the area of human resources development as well as in curriculum development for research training programmes with focus in the style of a German doctorate. Since 2014 I have been transfering my experiences from the doctoral training programme to eduction on all levels. Thus, my current work and research interests include career development i.e. methods for cross-cultural communication in an heterogeneous international research cluster, motivating interdisciplinary research co-operation, coaching international doctoral candidates, and supervising contributing external experts, particularly lecturers from other disciplines (e.g. language teacher, speech therapist, choir conductor, opera director) and nations.
